It turned out that 2019 was to be a pivotal year for me.
Two new grandchildren were on the way Stateside and 2020 would mark a dozen years in Ireland. And I reached the year at which another generation might have left work.
I would have too, but in doing what I do now - no part of the last decade has felt like work.
So I needed a new plan*!
I’d resisted moving my coaching work on line. It seemed impractical. Shoehorning 12-week courses that were equally reliant on relationship building as actual lessons - into the many traditional online learning platforms wasn’t working.
I’d used Facebook groups for group participants to continue their discussions - but as more of my client base retreated from Facebook - it was no longer an option.
Then I had an opportunity to explore Mighty Networks, beta testing a Northern Ireland business networking platform with a few colleagues.
Suffice it to say that when all else fails trust the Universe to provide. Call it serendipity, synchronicity or luck - it worked.
And it’s good that I set aside those doubts as I was exploring platforms, because I was right - and the Fall 2019 online groups were a very hard sell.
My perseverance was grounded in the lessons of the work itself. Abandon the judging and negative self-talk, rely on your cohort of “believing mirrors” - the people who are confident in you, and focus on the next baby step in the right direction.
I will attest to the fact that it’s easier for me to teach that setting the destination is all that’s required. It’s still tough to trust that when our navigation is programmed, we really do keep on course even when goal is obscured.
My tribe of fellow testers weren’t necessarily focused on me or my goals - but because they were focused and working steadfastly to their own - there was a momentum that carried us all even when individual energy or spirits waned.

*Oh, and about that “New Plan”, there’s been a hiccup or two… I was meant to be facilitating from the Eastern Time Zone for a few months a year - but what the heck, we’ll get there - next year.
